Outside the hospital when Susan Webster was born, a film crew was shooting scenes for On the Beach. Webster was educated in Australia, England and Canada, before she started work as a journalist in 1978. In 1983 she won an Australian Journalist of the Year Award for her reporting on bushfires that destroyed her former home and caused the death of a friend. Webster also contributed to a notorious report for the Melbourne Age on a mallee town, called 'A Town Like Rainbow'. Webster has lived in Berkshire, England, as well as her home state, Victoria.
