Douglas Francis Maxted arrived in Australia as a small child. He studied art and worked as a cartoonist and comic artist. He was art director of Rigby Ltd. Book Publishers from 1958 to 1962, after which he travelled to England, where his work was in such demand that he stayed there for 20 years. Maxted returned to Australia in 1983.
