Mary Townes and Harriet Root came to Australia from the USA to set up library services for the United States Information Service. They encouraged the establishment of an Australian Children's Book Week and Children's Book Council inviting prominent Australians of the time in the field of children's literature to a dinner in a Sydney restaurant, the Elizabeth Inn, in September 1945.
