Lionel Gilbert has been an educator, historian, and museum curator. He was for many years lecturer in History and curator of the Education Museum at the Armidale Teachers College and later Armidale College of Advanced Education. In 2008 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree by the University of New England, 'in recognition of his eminence as a lecturer in History', and for 'his outstanding contribution to the development of family and local history'.
