BiographyHistory

Alice Woodward was an illustrator who was commissioned by J.M. Dent and Macmillan and Company to illustrate children's books. As a child Alice Woodward was educated by governesses and was encouraged to draw. By her late teens she was illustrating for her father's (who was a scientist and Keeper of Geology at the Natural History Museum) 'lectures and for papers of his colleagues.' Alice herself studied at the South Kensington School of Art, the Westminster School of Art and at the the Académie Julian in Paris.
