Caroline Magerl emigrated from Germany to Sydney with her family as a child. Her parents built a yacht and the family spent many years sailing on the eastern coast of Australia. The experience of life on the water lies behind much of her work.
Magerl sailed to New Zealand in her twenties and returned to live in Brisbane where she began work as a freelance illustrator, painter and cartoonist. Her cartoons first appeared in The Bulletin.
She became interested in writing and illustrating picture books after the birth of her daughter. After some years illustrating for educational publishers, she illustrated the 2000 re-release of Libby Hathorn's Grandma's Shoes (originally illustrated by American illustrator Elivia), which in turn won her the 2001 Crichton Award, a Children's Book Council of Australia award recognising emerging talent in illustration.
Her first authored/illustrated picture book, Hasel and Rose, was released on 2014.
Magerl has exhibited nationally and internationally and has illustrated non-fiction works.
