BiographyHistory

Saint Francis of Assisi was an itinerant preacher who rejected wealth for a life of poverty. He founded the men-only Order of Friars Minor and The Third Order, the latter open to lay men and women who continued to live in the community.

Francis was the inspiration for Saint Clare of Assisi's religious order for women, later known as the Poor Clares.
