Most of the story of Catherine is based on legend. She is thought to have been born in Alexandria and was renowned for converting Roman citizens to Christianity. The Emperor Maxentius condemned her to death when Catherine converted Maxentius' wife and 200 of his guard. When the first attempt to have her killed failed, Maxentius ordered her beheaded.
Catherine is the patron saint of philosophers, maidens and preachers.
