BiographyHistory

An Australian pastoralist, cattle-breeder, politician, philanthropist and prominent Freemason, William John Clarke was eldest of three sons of William John Turner Clarke (1805- 1874). IN 1882 he was appointed a baronet by Queen Victoria in 1882 for his services as president of the Melbourne Exhibition in 1880-81 and for his prominence as a colonist. Clarke also received an honorary LL.D. from Cambridge in 1886, and in London was a member of the Victorian Commission to the Indian and Colonial Exhibition.

  • Clarke was born at Lovely Banks, a property situated near Hobart Town, Tasmania.

  • Clarke's son Rupert succeeded him as Baronet. The baronetcy of Clarke of Rupertswood is one of only two active hereditary titles in Australia.
