BiographyHistory

Born in the Northumberland township of Alnwick, James Patterson immigrated to the colony of Victoria in 1852 to seek his fortune on the goldfields. After a few years as a digger and four as a farmer, he settled in Chewton, operating a butchering shop and later moving into real estate. He served as Mayor of Chewton for four years before being elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Castlemaine in 1870. In 1893 Patterson became the 17th Patterson Premier of Victoria. He remained in the position until the year before his death from influenza.
