BiographyHistory

Samuel Marsden was a blacksmith and lay preacher who took up a chaplaincy in New South Wales, at Parramatta, where he was also a magistrate and a farmer. 'Known as the "Flogging Parson", he was much criticised for his severity to the convicts, and appears in this light in Price Warung's story "Mr Slyde's Auction"; he also figures in several historical novels and plays.'
