Daughter of (Edward) John Spencer, 8th Earl of Spencer, and Frances Rothe, younger daughter of the 4th Baron Fermoy. Formerly married to Charles, Prince of Wales, from whom she separated in December 1992 and divorced in August 1996. Her death in a car accident in Paris in August 1997 shocked the world, and she has remained a popular figure in culture and writing.
