Catholic priest and book collector.
Leo Hayes's significance to Australian print culture rests in his enormous and wide-ranging collection: the Leo Hayes Collection finished at roughly 55,000 objects, including 25,000 published works (books, pamphlets and periodicals, not all Australian) and 30,000 holographic objects (manuscripts, letters and documents). The collection, which he wished to remain in Queensland, was obtained by The University of Queensland (UQ) in 1967.
UQ conferred an honorary M.A. on Hayes in 1967, and late established two scholarships in his name, for research in Australian literary or historical sources.
