Bungaree was from the area of Broken Bay in New South Wales and is recorded to have witnessed the landing of the First Fleet in 1788. Travelling to Sydney, Bungaree joined explorers on expeditions into Eastern Australia as an interpreter and guide. In 1815, Governor Lachlan Macquarie presented Bungaree and his wife Matora with a 'gorget' or breastplate.
