BiographyHistory

James Tegg was the third son - one of fourteen children - of the London publisher Thomas Tegg. Along with his brother Samuel Augustus, James left England for Sydney in 1834, setting up a bookselling and publishing business there in early 1835. On 16 December 1836, he married Eliza Rebecca Silvester at St. Phillip's Church in Sydney - the couple would have two daughters. It is possible that Tegg's emigration to New South Wales was partly for health reasons, and ill health seems to have continued to trouble him in the colony. He handed over his business to his assistant in 1844, and died the following year.
