Nelson grew up in Sydney, gained a Master's degree in history and worked on the ministerial staff in the New South Wales state government. She then travelled and worked overseas, and later enrolled in a Ph.D. in Women's Studies at the University of Sydney. She appeared at the 1999 Sydney Writer's Festival as one of the Sydney Morning
Herald's Best Young Australian Novelists of 1999. As a creative writing teacher she has lectured in writing at the University of Technology, Sydney and at the Sydney Writers' Centre. She has co-written screenplays and treatments for feature and documentary films.
