BiographyHistory

The son of journalist and newspaper editor Robert Clyde Packer (1879–1934), Frank Packer also started his career as a journalist, beginning with the The Daily Guardian in 1923 as a cadet. In 1932 he joined his father at Associated Newspapers and the following year started the Australian Women's Weekly. After establishing Australian Consolidated Press (ACP) in 1936 Packer, as managing director, transformed the then moribund Daily Telegraph into one of Australia's leading newspapers. He served as chairman of ACP from 1936 until 1974. and during his tenure oversaw the foundation of what was to become the Nine television network and the Packer media empire.
