BiographyHistory

Royal Navy officer, the first Governor of New South Wales, and founder of the British penal colony that later became the city of Sydney, Australia.

Phillip sailed with the First Fleet in 1787, and departed the penal colony to return to England in 1972. He retired in 1805, but remained in contact with people in New South Wales until his death in 1814.
