BiographyHistory

Born on the East Timor/Indonesian border, Jose Monteiro came to Australia as a refugee. Together with Maria Alice Casimiro, also a refugee, he produced three plays in Darwin about the East Timor situation, their Death at Balibo receiving a standing ovation. Monteiro marvels at the freedom the individual has in Australia to make such a political comment. ' I wish it could be so in East Timor,' he says (personal communication).
