BiographyHistory

Dark wrote numerous books on the social aspects of medicine as well as works on political and social issues. He studied Medicine at Sydney University, qualifying in 1914, and embarked for England with the first Australian doctors to join the Royal Australian Medical Corps. Dark was awarded the Military Cross for his service at Passchendaele. He married Eleanor Dark in 1922 and moved with her to Katoomba, Blue Mountains in 1923. It was here that they built their home Varuna in 1939. Dark's left wing politics made him the subject of harassment and threats, eventually prompting the Darks' departure from Varuna and their re-settlement in Queensland.
