Tom Griffith started work as a telegraph messenger. During the Second World War, he served as a weatherman in the RAAF working in Darwin during the Japanese air raids and at Proserpine when mustard gas experiments were being carried out. Griffith was a public servant with the Department of Social Security and an SP bookmaker. He gave evidence at Queensland's Fitzgerald Inquiry into police corruption. Griffith moved to WA in 1979.
