An American illustrator who collected editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Sewell was visiting Australia when he began sketching illustrations for Alice in the style of Indigneous bark paintings. His illustrations came to the attention of Barbara Ker Wilson, and suggested the idea of what became Nancy Sheppard's Pitjantjatjara adaptation Alitjinya Ngura Tjukurtjarangka.
