A film production house, Featherstone Productions was established in Bondi Junction in 1985 by Don Featherstone (q.v.) and Judy Featherstone. The company, which also acts as a distributor, has produced more than forty documentary films across many genres, including history, music and arts, science, sports, and current affairs. Among the best known are The Beach (about beach culture in Australia) and An Imaginary Life (about writer David Malouf, q.v.). The company also produced the seminal television drama Babakuieria.
Featherstone Productions' films have screened on networks across the globe, including the BBC, ITV, CBC, NHK, RTE, ZDF arte, Ovation USA, WNET, Canal 22 Mexico, Bravo USA, BSkyB, UK Performing Arts, RAI Italy, LA Sept, YLE Finland, SVT Sweden, DRS Germany, TEVEL Israel, NOS Netherlands, Iran Broadcasting Corp., TV2 Iceland, HRT Croatia, Rep. Of Kazakstan TV, Cablehogar Argentina, Vargas Panama, POLTEL Poland, Czech TV, Tele Madrid Spain, and ETV South Africa.
In addition to producing films, the company also manages Australian shoots. To date, these have included several major productions, notably The Man of the Millennium, The South Bank Show: LWT, and The Adventure of English.
