Tanka poet, teacher and translator of the Japanese language. Amelia Fielden began writing her own tanka after translating a volume of tanka, Time Passes (1995) by the Japanese poet Kawano Yuko. She published a number of collections from 2000. 'Her work in tanka reflects her devotion to both the Japanese achievement and the need for a new, resilient short poem in English that is capable of expressing personal, contemporary experience.' Fielden has also translated, Cicada Forest: An Anthology of Tanka by Mariko Kitakubo (Kadokawa Shoten, 2008) and, with Ugawa Kozue, As Things Are, by Kawano Yuko (Ginninderra Press, 2003) and Natsu No Ushiro : Behind Summer : Japanese Tanka Poems (Ginninderra Press, 2005).
