Born in Canberra and raised in Wollongong, Tognetti studied with William Primrose in Wollongong, then Alice Waten at the Sydney Conservatorium, and finally Igor Ozim at the Bern Conservatory. In 1989, he led several perfomances of the Australian Chamber Orchestra: he was appointed lead violin in November 1989, and Artistic Director in 1990. In 2015, he marked 25 years as Artistic Director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

He has also appeared with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Academy of Ancient Music, Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Handel & Haydn Society (Boston), Hong Kong Philharmonic, Camerata Salzburg, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Nordic Chamber Orchestra, and all of the Australian symphony orchestras, and has been the London Barbican Centre's first Artist-in-Residence at Milton Court Concert Hall.

His film scores (as co-composer) include Peter Weir’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and Tom Carroll’s surf film Storm Surfers.
