BiographyHistory

Egon Kisch, a successful journalist in Europe and author of several novels and essays, came to Australia in November 1934 as a delegate to a political conference. Because of his communist affiliations he was, however, considered to be an undesirable immigrant (who had to take the dictation test in Gaelic, one of the few European languages he didn't master), and the period of less than three months he spent in Australia was mainly concerned with litigation over his rights of entry. He described his Australian experience in the book Australian Landfall.
