BiographyHistory

William H. Newlands, established as a stationer in Castlemaine, Victoria in 1858, set up a printery there in in the late 1870s. He was also a bookseller. A branch of the printery, Atlas Press, opened in Little Collins Street in Melbourne in 1896, with William's son, A. Edgar Newlands, as proprietor.

Atlas Press published a range of verse and verse drama and prose, and is credited with publishing the first Australian art monograph, A Consideration of the Art of Ernest Moffitt, by Lionel Lindsay (1899), which contained original etchings by Moffitt. William Newlands continued printing in Castlemaine until 1915. Edgar Newlands retired in July 1926 and Atlas Press ceased publishing in the late 1920s.
