Lee Darroch grew up in Lockington, Victoria, leaving in 1975 at the age of 17, she studied at the Preston Institute of Technology, Melbourne from 1976 to 1980.
After her studies, Darroch backpacked overseas returning to Australia in 1978 and settled to family life on Gragin (Raymond Island) in the East Gippsland district of Victoria. In 1994, began her career as an artist and by 2000 Darroch was exhibiting her work at Homebush Bay. In that same year she received her first award, receiving a highly commended citation for her work on paper, in the National Indigenous Heritage Art Award at Old Parliament House, Canberra.
