BiographyHistory

Founded in Vienna in 1923 as Phaidon Verlag by Bela Horovitz, Ludwig Goldscheider and Frederick Unger, Phaidon Press was purchased by Allen and Unwin in 1936, when it relocated in England. The Press developed as a publisher of quality fine art books for a mass market. Phaidon Press was purchased by the New York firm Praegar in 1967, and in subsequent decades underwent multiple changes in ownership. Richard Shlagman bought it in 1990, and re-established the Press as a publisher of books on the visual arts with the highest quality of content, design and production.
