Theologian and historian Dr John Moses was ‘an Australian expert on German history and in particular on Lutheran “reluctant revolutionary” Dietrich Bonhoeffer’.
Dr Moses ‘taught at the University of Queensland from 1965 to 1994 and was professorial associate at St. Mark’s National Theological Institute in Canberra from 2007. He was a prolific author of monographs and articles, … some of his books include The Politics of Illusion: The Fischer Controversy in German Historiography (1975), German Trade Unions From Bismarck to Hitler (1982), Trade Union Theory from Marx to Walesa (1990), The German Empire and Britain’s Pacific Dominions 1871–1919 (2000), The Reluctant Revolutionary: Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Collision with Prusso-German History (2009), Anzac Day Origins: Canon DJ Garland and Trans-Tasman Commemoration (2013, co-author) [and] Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Being There for Others (2023).’ Dr Moses also wrote a memoir, Looking Over the Fence: Reflections and Reminiscences of a historian's Journey from the Australian Bush to a Wider World (2023).
