BiographyHistory

'Reed and Harris was the Melbourne publishing company of John Reed and Max Harris. This small progressive company wanted "good writing, not good sales" and the company was prepared to "publish at a loss" because book publishing is a "cultural activity". It also encouraged author-publisher co-operation; "the author has a say in the way his book is produced, his advice is sought, and he is more often a profit-sharer than a royalty receiver". The publishing list embraced poetry, short stories, autobiography, novels, nonfiction and the Angry Penguins journal (Australian Writers & Artists' Market 154). Artist Sidney Nolan was very much a part of the Reed & Harris team, providing illustrations for many of the books.' http://www.ernmalley.com/ (Sighted 17/01/05).
