Nick Gray came to Australia in 1973 and lived mainly in the Southern Tablelands area. He gained a BA in Writing from the University of Canberra, a Bachelor of Letters from the Australian National University and a Master of Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong. He taught writing at different times, including at the Centre of Continuing Education at the Australian National University.
A musician as well as a writer, Gray was an accomplished guitarist. He owned every Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix record ever produced. He was strongly influenced by early British comedy such as The Goons and Monty Python. Much of his work draws on the humorous views of his life experiences in Australia and the people he met.
His poetry books were limited editions which he collated and produced for family and friends over the last five years of his life. They were small works of art which he liked to present around Christmas and other special occasions.
