Rosemary Sutcliffe and Henry Treece have been cited as the two authors whose books have meant most to David Kennett. As an illustrator as well as a writer, he has also credited the work of illustrators Victor Ambrus, Charles Keeping, N C Wyeth and Howard Pyle as having a lasting and continuing influence on his own work.
Kennett has said that pictures have been important to him and he has always enjoyed drawing animals. He has spent many days drawing at the zoo.
