Robert Barrett grew up in Bondi, Sydney and was educated at Bondi Beach Public School and Randwick Boys High. After leaving school at fourteen, he gained a trade as a butcher and also worked as a boner in meatworks in Sydney and Townsville.
After sustaining an injury, and while on compensation, Barrett completed some writing courses with the Workers Educational Association and wrote a short story on his larger-than-life character Les Norton which was published as 'A Hard Man' in Australian Penthouse. He has written gags for disc jockeys on Radio 2SM and he has also appeared in a number of films and television commercials.
Barrett published more than eighteen books, many based around the fictional character of Les Norton, an original, hard, street-wise man who runs Kings Cross.
