BiographyHistory

George Virtue was a London bookseller and publisher who established a reputation as a publisher of well-illustrated books. From 1848 he published the lavishly illustrated and distinguished Art Journal. Around 1848 Virtue entered into a partnership with Arthur Hall, forming Arthur Hall, Virtue and Co. The firm founded a printing works in London which achieved commercial success by providing printing, engraving and binding services to other publishers. The partnership was dissolved in 1862 and George Virtue's son, James Brent Virtue, continued in business as J. S. Virtue and Company.
