BiographyHistory

Jim Godfrey migrated to Australia at the age of nineteen, and became a dairy farmer at Long Flat, near Murray Bridge, SA. Jim was opposed to war, so he enlisted in 1916 as a stretcher bearer rather than a soldier, serving at Gallipoli, then in France and Belgium. He was awarded a Military Medal in 1917. He and his family moved to Murray Bridge in about 1943. He was a friend of Indigenous writer and inventor, David Unaipon, who stayed with him on occasion. A well-read man, he published several books of verse; he also loved music and wrote a number of songs, some of which were published.
