BiographyHistory

Frederick Gleason and Maturin Murray Ballou established Gleason's Publishing Hall in Boston in 1844. The Company published popular romance and adventure stories, in Flag of Our Union, a 'weekly family story paper', from 1846, and in cheap novels, some of them written by Ballou. In 1851 it issued the first major illustrated weekly in America, Gleason's Pictorial and Drawing Room Companion. The partnership also published as the United States Publishing Company between 1844 and 1846.

Ballou bought Gleason out in 1854, and continued to publish as M. M. Ballou until 1863, when the compay was sold to Elliott, Thomes and Talbot.
