Alexander C. McClurg, who had previously been in business in the partnership Jansen, McClurg and Company, established A. C. McClurg and Company as a bookseller and publisher in Chicago in 1886. The company published a range of American novels and British reprints, the most successful being the Tarzan books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. McClurg's bookstore was famous in Chicago as a meeting-place for literary people. Although the retail business was sold in 1923, the name has been used for Chicago bookstores since then. McClurg died in 1901 but the firm continued to publish until 1931, after which the company continued as a successful wholesale book distributor.
