Pearson , Durham : Pentland Press , 1995 Z1365437 1989 single work novel historical fiction romance 'Gartsbrae is an imposing and strangely powerful house in a Glasgow suburb and is occupied by Mary Lindsay and her enterprising husband, Keck. Mary's brother, Andrew McIver, a watchmaker, lives in Edinburgh and it is the relationships between the two that is the lynchpin of the story. This is explored with telling effect by Pearson, against a subtle examination of Scottish culture, of the influence of the church and the over-riding virtue of self-help. The action moves through different classes of society and through different generations, and a careful balance of tragedy, pathos and humour is skilfully achieved. Peppering the text is a welcome use of Scottish dialect, making Gartsbrae a strong, original and compelling read.' (Back cover of 1995 edition.)
