BiographyHistory

John C. Winston and Company was founded by John Clark Winston in Philadelphia in 1884. It published juvenile literature, popular novels, textbooks and religious books, reprints of classics (including a 40 volume Works of Shakespeare) and a line of Bibles. In 1959 the firm merged with Henry Holt and Company and Rinehart and Company to form Holt, Rinehart and Winston.
