BiographyHistory

Austro-Hungarian-born American stage magician and stunt performer. In 1910, he toured Australia, and brought with him his French Voisin biplane, intending to be the first person in Australia to fly. He made three flights at Diggers Rest, Victoria, which are still sometimes reported as the first aerial flights in Australia (which has actually been undertaken by Londoner Colin Defries in December 1909 at Victoria Parrk Racecourse, Sydney).

Houdini is included in AustLit because of his influence on Australian-written works.
