BiographyHistory

Theatre designer and children's book illustrator, Desmond Digby's award winning illustrations for a picture book version of A. B. Paterson's Waltzing Matilda in 971 are acknowledged as a landmark in children's picture book illustration. The illustrations were exhibited at the 1973 Biennale d'Illustrations de Bratislava (BIB).

After childhood and tertiary study in New Zealand, Digby won a bursary to study at the Slade School in London in 1954 and began working in design for theatre and opera. He settled in Australia in 1959 and designed for the Elizabethan Trust Opera and the Australian Opera Company as well as designing and illustrating books for children.
