BiographyHistory

John Phillip was one of the early pioneers of the Port Phillip colony which later became Melbourne. In his autobiography he claims to have purchased a half-acre block at the corner of Swanston and Elizabeth Streets, though the location is in some doubt. He worked on sheep stations, travelling throughout what was later to become Victoria, eventually being granted land near what is now Deniliquin. He also participated in the first Australian gold rush.
