Martin first came to Australia at the age of twenty-five and returned in the early years of the twentieth century, visiting Tasmania and other parts of the continent. He recorded his experiences and encounters in his publications Himmelsstürmer and Grünhorn in Australien in the Ensslin and Laiblin series 'Aus weiter Welt'.
