Jeremy Fisher's writing encompasses fiction, poetry, prose, reviews and critical articles. He was first published in 1974 and has written many works in a wide range of genres since then. Fisher supported himself as an editor and publishing manager for educational and scientific/technical/medical publishers for a number of years before moving into rights management and advocacy roles. He was President of the Society of Editors (NSW) in 1996 and a member of the Board of the Australian Publishers' Association from 1998-2000. In 1984 Fisher was awarded the inaugural Gold Medal of the Australian Society of Indexers (AusSI) for his indexing of The Australian Encyclopaedia, 4th edition.
Fisher was an early activist in Sydney's gay liberation movement and much of his writing has some connection with homosexual issues. His novel for young adults, Perfect Timing, which does not have any gay themes, has been his most commercially successful work to date.
Fisher completed his Masters in Writing thesis, a novel titled 'Music from Another Country', in 1996 and his Doctorate in Creative Writing for 'The Poofter's Dog' in 2003 at the University of Technology, Sydney. In 2004, Fisher was appointed Executive Director of the Australian Society of Authors, remaining in this position until mid-December 2009 when he moved to a position as Senior Lecturer in Writing at the University of New England.
