Eddie Fong Ling-Ching joined Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) in 1979 as a senior script writer. His short film, The Painter won the Best Film Award in the Hong Kong Independent Short Film Festival (1978). In 1981, he was appointed the Assistant Creative Director for Century Motion Picture Company. He set up his production company in 1983, and made his directorial debut in An Amorous Woman of the Tang Dynasty (1984). His third film, Kawashima Yoshiko was selected for the 1990 Venice Film Festival. From 1986 onwards, he concentrated solely on scriptwriting, working both for feature films and television dramas produced by RTHK. he has also written reviews and done some translation.
The film Autumn Moon, was winner of the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Festival (1992); Farewell, China (1990) was winner of the Special Jury Award in the Torino Film Festival (1990), four Awards in the Golden Horse Film Festival (1990) and was selected for the Toronto, Chicago, and Munich Film Festivals (1990) and the Rotterdam Film Festival (1991).
