BiographyHistory

Pavol (Paul) Hrtus-Jurina was born in Turzovka, Slovakia and gained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Commenius University, Bratislava. He began writing and publishing poetry in Slovak in the student magazine Rozvoj [Progress] in 1935. Between 1946 and 1948 he was head of the publishing department of Slovak State Publishing. His first collection of short stories, and particularly his novel, Kamen na kameni, won considerable critical acclaim in pre-socialist Slovakia and placed him amongst the leading Slovak writers of the time. In Australia, after a period of working in manual and clerical jobs, he taught at various denominational colleges between 1962 and 1984.
