Irina Pana, also a speaker of French, has worked as a writer, translator and academic. She taught in the English department at Monash University, Melbourne between 1986 and 1996 before becoming Professor of English at the University of Bucharest. Pana has been a member of the Romanian Writer's Union, and won awards for her work in Romania. Her work was broadcast by Radio Bucharest from 1971 to 1986. In Australia she has read her work at Piccolo Spoleto, the Lord Jim Hotel and La Mama Poetica (1989), and at the Piccolo Festival in (1990). Pana was also responsible for Melbourne Sundays : translations into English as a second life (1998) which contains the letters of Romanian immigrants to Australia.
