Although spending thirteen years as a public servant following his secondary education, Rogers continually developed his life-long passion for painting and drawing. While still employed in the public service he studied Fine Arts at the Queensland College of Art and held several exhibitions of his work, the first in 1983.
In 1987 Rogers left regular employment to begin work as a freelance graphic designer. He illustrated many education and trade books and designed numerous book covers. Rogers' work as a children's book illustrator garnered several awards including the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal. (Rogers was the first Australian to win the Medal.)
