Born into a 'literary' family, Spodris Klauverts was interested in art and literature from childhood. His grandfather was the founder of the Latvian Society, a Latvian nationalist organisation, editor of a Latvian newspaper before the period of independence and a bookshop proprietor. His mother was a translator of Russian literature.
In Australia, Klauverts was committed to promoting Latvian cultural life. He was the organiser of the first Latvian Arts Festival in 1951 and for more than twenty-five years he arranged monthly literary and musical evenings, exhibitions and annual 'writers days'.
The founder of the Sydney Latvian Theatre, Klauverts was actively involved as producer, director, actor and playwright-in-residence. Between 1964-1977 Klauverts staged 'Kaleidoscops' [Kaleidoscope] a series of bi-annual revues which consisted of short, 'witty' skits. His plays have been performed and published in Latvian.
